Evinrude Power Pilot Control Box Question

Unit installed in 1973, (matched to an 85HP Evinrude) but the boat doesn't have a Tach. So I bought one (used OMC from around the same era) that the guy said 'it should plug right in', and I believe him.... but where?

I assume that because all the wires go to the Control box from the motor, he was meaning it should plug in there, but I can't see where it would, outwardly.

Do I hafta take apart the Control Box to plug it in? Besides the Power lead and the Ground there's a small square connector.

Anybody have any experience doing this? I have a wiring diagram for the motor, but I'm not gonna run a wire all the way back there if I don't hafta.....

On the back of the control box below the key switch there should be a plug. It contains the "female" receptors for 3 wires Positive, Negative and Tach output. Go to www.tflx.com/PDF/99320.pdf which is the teleflex web site for troubleshooting and installing tachometers.

Bob

Just went out and looked.... no plug under the Keyswitch, only a momentary toggle for the chokes.

Re: Evinrude Power Pilot Control Box Question

Also, I've searched high and low for a manual of some sort for this Evinrude Power Pilot Control Box, but haven't found one.... was there *ever* a manual for these things and where would I find one?

Re: Evinrude Power Pilot Control Box Question

raoul, i'm in the same predicament, so i'll let you know if i find an answer before someone else offers it. i believe my RC (remote control) is like yours. (and i posted basically the same question 7/3)

from what i gathered from posts, the tach connection on some RC's must be in the spot where we have a toggle choke switch- just below the ign swtch.

and i believe its gonna be a grey wire at the rectifier that feeds it on my 86Rude140. i finally found the spot in the clymer manual listing rc's (hadn't found it when i opened my forum). i'll ck for the Rude85 also, since the manual covers 1973-90,48-235hp :)

Re: Evinrude Power Pilot Control Box Question

well, from the manual, it lists 73v4's using a grey wire, which should be inside your RC... other side of that wire is at a terminal block on your motor. the block connection goes to purple/red to your rectifier. the rec having pur/rd,blk,blue.

and ckg the teleflex link, that appears to list the grey wire also. i haven't hooked up my tach yet to verify. Re: Evinrude Power Pilot Control Box Question

OMC did not put the tach "plug in " on the remote control until 1978.

Older boxes starting in '73 had the gray wire inside the box and you spliced it and ran the wire thru the bottom of the box. The original tachs only used the gray and a ground. Later ones used a purple 12V lead also.

Seahorse, that sounds about right, as there's two holes in the bottom that are the right size for a wire or two to come out.

I'm not looking forward to taking the CB apart though, that's why I was asking about a manual....

Thanx for the answers guys!
