To give you a little background, I have a 1987 SPL 28 Evinrude. I have had a hard time starting this motor when cold every sense I bought my boat, which was about six months ago. I asked the question to you guys back them and it was suggested that I fast Idle the motor and also hold the key into to activate the coke for an eight count to correct this. This help a little but I still have the problem. When I went to pull my plugs the other day I noticed that they were covered in oil. Not so much that they were dripping but it was noticiable. I've had two stoke dirt bikes before and never was there this much oil on my plugs. I have been mixing at 100:1 which was reccomend on the side of the engine. Any thoughts what might have happened? I had the plugs replaced about two months ago and ran the engine about six times before I noticed the problem.

First of all, stop mixing 100:1 and start mixing 50:1. OMC put out a service bulletin years ago to remove the 100:1 sticker and instructed customers to mix 50:1. You might try checking the choke plates (if that's what you have) to see if they're opening and closing properly. Does your motor idle down to 650rpm okay?

Will start running 50:1. Will also check the coke plate to see if it engages properly. Not sure if it idles down to 600 or so rpms with no tach but once engine is warm it does idle down nicely.

Check carb float level, too high or junk on the seat and it could be flooding or running excessively rich.

Be sure you are using the correct plug.
