evinrude overheating

Over the weekend I made a bone head mistake by running my 83' 115 evinrude in the river near the harbor. Shortly after entering the harbor the overheating buzzer went off.

After inspecting it, I noticed some debris in the water pump intake screen.

Today at idle, the heads became very hot. I still see water shooting out of the indicator.

Could it be debris in the water pump?
Or a bad thermostat, due to overheating?
Some of the plug caps left a sticky residue on the plugs and the orange coil wires were melted.
Could it be that I need to replace the wires/plugs?

Thanks,

Re: evinrude overheating

drop your lower unit and check your waterpump impeller...while you got it dropped might as well change it out...if you havent changed the housing in 3years or so..might as put a whole new kit on it.....pull your thermostats too....dont run your motor until you do this......if it still overheats after all this.. you might want to pull your heads and check for blockage..........i just went through all of this myself..i had a ton of sand in my powerhead and waterpump.

its definetly not your plugs/wires...

If it got hot enough to melt wires, you got other troubles in addition to whatever caused it to begin with. At the very least, you should replace the head gaskets and exhaust cover gaskets, and inspect the pistons (through the ports) for scoring. If you choose to not replace the gaskets, they will surely leak and cause worse damage. While you have all that off, you can look for crud in the cooling chambers. Replace that water pump too.

Possible that some of the debris has travelled up into the thermostat housing. You may have plugged the two small holes in the valve body. (around the thermostats). Pull the thermostat cover off and look at the body. Two extremely small bypass holes may be plugged. If they are not open it will overheat at idle and slow speeds. While you are in there, replace the thermostats and make sure the nylon bypass valves are not melted (deformed).

Thank you very much for all of the great information.
I am definitely going to check out the water pump and already have taken off one of the heads. Appears to have some crud inside the water passage way. Thermostats next.

Thanks again

Oh, when putting back the head, do I need to use gasket sealer ?

If the heads got hot enough to melt wires, I would definitely pull the heads and check the water deflectors. There's two to a head and are thick rubber tubes.

Some head gaskets are marked "USE NO SEALER". If not marked, give them a LIGHT coat of gasket sealing compound.

Torque the heads 18>20 ft lb starting at the center head bolts and spiral out. Torque them in at least two stages, three is better.....ie...10 > 15 > 20.

Re: evinrude overheating

thanks OBJ,
The 1 head that I do have off, I noticed that the water deflector in the middle is very hard and has no elasticity. Does it need to hold a tight seal? And do I need to replace it?

Can I purchase the deflectors at my OMC part store?

Thanks for all the great advice!!!

Replace it....replace all of them. You can get them at any J/Rude dealer. Take your model number with you when you go. They're cheap....won't dip into the beer fund.....d:)

Re: evinrude overheating

OK, finally had time to check out the thermostats and found some sand inside. How should I flush the adaptor housing w/out taking off the power head?
Should I shoot water from the thermostat cover side and drain?
It appears that the 2 white plastic valves are melted and definitely need replacement.
But should I also replace the thermostats, or just the gasket?
I was told that I could test the thermos by placing in hot water (should open around 160 degree). Is this right?

Re: evinrude overheating

are the pictures appearing? What am I doing wrong?

Also, I noticed that 1 of the fuel lines that comes out of the bottom of the carb came off. This line travels along the left side of the motor (if you are facing the front of the boat) toward the back and inserts at the top near one of the heads. It is directly to the rear of the air silencer assembly. Reattach w/ a zip tie? Or a stainless steel hose clamp?

thanks in advance

You probably have the late production model with the recirculation system. That recirculation hose ususally does not need a clamp, but if it came off, I would either cut 1/2" off the end and reattach, or just replace it-to make sure it seats proplerly. You may need to downsize your pictures to get them to take. Definitely replace the thermostats also-why chance using the old ones, esp since getting to them again is so difficult.
