I have a Evinrude Outboard
60 hp 1980 it starts up good idles good and will rev up good to full throttle in netural. But when I put it in gear it only goes slow about 4 mph after stalling out. I trying to figure it out because the engine will have high rpms when it in netural. Does anyone have a suggestion.
I even tried to manually move the throttle butterfly when in gear but the engine stalls. But when i do that in netural in runs fast. Same problem.

Howdy, Madecool.

What the engine will do without a load is a poor indicator of its condition.

You may be starving for fuel, but more likely you are running on one cylinder.

If pumping your primer bulb gets the engine to power up, you need to check your fuel supply system, including the fuel pump.

If squirting a bit of fuel mix into a carb throat gets her up, you have a carb gummed up.

If pulling one spark plug wire while at idle kills the engine and pulling the other has no effect, you have a dead cylinder. Check each lead for a hot, blue spark to the block.

Let us know what you find. :)

Re: Evinrude Outboard will not go fast

Ok I do remember that when going about 4 mph if I choked it. It would make it go faster. That's the only way it would go faster. Sometimes for a second or 2 it would try to run a little faster but go back to running 4 mph.
Yea i need to check them things you told me about. So i fix the problem right. I will check the spark again since it has been a while since i checked maybe I only just checked one of them.
That easy enough. But if they are ok then I need to clean out the carburetors. That will be the easy problem for me to fix. Thankyou for your advice.

madecool,

If choking it makes it run faster, you have a fuel problem.

Hi Madecool,
You maybe the guy Iam looking for,I have a 1981 Evinrude 60hp engine,I just bought a speed boat for a bargain but the only snag was that the engine is totaly stripped,it needs a new piston and rings and a new water pump,as I did n't strip it down I was wondering if you had a digital camara could you take some pics of the engine close up in different positions,I am waiting for my manual to arrive from the US,
contact me on colintarry@hotmail.com
Thanks Colin

Hi Red sky at night. . .
JB
You where exactly right. Today after reading some other replies and not reading yours more careful. I started checking the fuel system the filter etc... Then after putting that back together I decided to check the spark in both wires so I grounded both plugs did not see a spark in the top one. So I took one off(bottom wire) and ran the engine it sounded the same.Would not run with just the top one in. So I looked at the coil(top one) and decided to price one I found one for $17.oo at the shop they had in stock. So I got it put on and tried running just on the top with the bottom wire not plugged in. It ran now. Thanks for the good advice.

Paul at madecool.com
