I hate paying $42 for Evinrude synthetic oil, dealer says I must have computer recalibrated if I change brands,,sounds crazy to me,must be a reasonable priced substitute oil out there, and how does the computer know what brand of oil I'm using,,

It doesnt - thats why you need to tell it. Once it knows the oil type it can decide on the metering values.

Synthetic to synthetic I'd be surprised if there was a tuning difference, synthetic to dino. I'm sure there is a difference.

Need model number, Jim. No answer is relevant without it.

The computer controls the metering of oil so if your running XD100 you need to replace it with a oil that is 100% synthenic and able to provide lubricity at the 1:100 ratio.(Mercury Premium + Synthenic) so your will still pay at least $30+ a gallon for oil. The XD100 setting will/should burn 100 gallons of fuel to 1 gallon of oil which is pretty cheap in my book.

Re: Evinrude oil substitute

Do the ETecs maintain a 100:1 ratio (XD-100 only)when running hard? I thought they varied the ratio throughout the powerband. Or is it that they use 100:1 at high power and lean the oil even more at low power?

You, the customer, need to tell a Bombardier dealer what oil you plan to use in the engine. You have two options: run any type TCW3 oil at 50 to 1 or run 100 to 1 XD100. It's your call. The dealer will set the computer to whatever you want to run in it. From an economic standpoint, you are probably better off using the XD100. With the recalibrated ( 100 to 1) setting on the engine, it will burn half the oil as when it came setup originally from the factory set to burn 50 to 1 XD50. I'd be very leery of trying to substitute any other oil for XD100 and run at the current computer oil setting on your engine. From a long term perspective, the XD100 probably burns cleaner and with less carbon in the combustion chambers.

Re: Evinrude oil substitute

The Evinrude E-TEC does have an optional "reduced oil setting" that is programmed into the computer by the dealer, at the customer's request. It requires the use of Evinrude's XD-100 oil only, not substitutes.

The factory standard oil setting is for the use of any TC-W3 rated oils, and it will use more oil since there is less lubricity and anti-wear additives in standard oils.

The engine computer takes care of the oil consumption based on rpm, temp, acceleration, etc. There is no 50:1 or 100:1 ratios. Oil use is based on how the motor is run.

See your dealer who can determine or reset the oil programming if you wish. It only takes a few moments on the laptop to do.

No! XD100 doesn't stand for 100:1 at all. The oiling varies considerably by RPM. If all you did was troll, you would get greater than 100:1. The reality is, for most people, E-Tecs get between 85:1 and 90:1. My pair of 175's get 87:1 typically for a profile of ~ 50% trolling and 50% ~ 4000 RPM. Same goes for fuel use. E-Tecs, below 2000 RPM operate an extremely lean fuel/air mix (it wouldn't even fire if the charge wasn't directed toward the plugs), and much richer for cooling at higher power settings. Oil cost when using XD100, because use is typically fairly low and is about the same as using a quality TC-W3 oil. I use 50% of the oil my previous motors (a pair of Merc 150 HP Black Maxes) used.

BTW, if your motor is an E-Tec there is no substitute oil for XD100 that anyone will guarantee won't fry your powerhead and there's no practical reason to consider a change. And if it's XD100 you're using, you're getting hosed at $42 a gallon. Try here:

I didn't know the specific numbers, but this is what I had come to understand.
