Evinrude motor Purchase?

Found a nice boat with a 2017 Evinrude 200hp E-tec motor. I was excited until I heard evinrude is no longer. They are still honoring warranties and making parts. Would you stay away from this motor or will it be fine getting it fixed in 5 years?

Can't tell you how they're handling warranties, but parts and service should be no problem on them. Parts should be pretty available for the foreseeable future.

What is the deal with these motors? 2 stroke or 4 stroke? Are the efficient? Loud?

They are a direct , fuel injected 2 stroke.----Efficient and not very loud.-----Make sure you have a local dealer with the expertise and mechanic to work on these.-----And that goes for all big , high tech 4 strokes too.

My cousin is on the automation team as an electrician, that is retooling the Evinrude plant in Sturtevant WI. He says they are doing lots of work for Project "GHOST". He claims he hasn't been allowed to see any actual product plans or info. But that the new product line will be produced, and he believes it will be marketed as Evinrude.

It still stinks the way they handled this with the dealer network.

It appears that many dealers may shy away from anything with the Evinrude label.-----Also just noticed the Volvo may be getting out of the 7 Marine product too.

So I just want to know if I buy this boat I will be able to get service and parts for this engine for the next 5 years. Thats all.

Looking at 2012 Rinker 196 with a 2017 Evinrude 200HP E TEC HO. The boat initially had a 115hp but the owner put on the 200!!

Contact BRP about warranty and contact local evinrude dealer about ongoing service commitment.

Ok thanks. I guess I could always use the evinrude for 5 years and then switch the motor to a merc or yamaha when the time comes correct?

???---Lot of speculation here and everywhere.---BRP / Johnson / Evinrude have been supplying many consumable parts for motor that were built 50 years ago have they not ?

If that's the way you really feel, why risk it. Buy what you want in the first place and be done with it, rather than have the guilt complex of geez, I sure goofed on this one. Remember money spent is money spent....gone forever. What stays with you is what you bought with that spent money and if you made the right decision, every time you use said product, or think about it, you pat yourself on the back for your "wise decision initially". Do you think about what it cost?????? Probably not!

I know the feeling having done that many times over my life. I'm finally getting smarter and doing what I mentioned more frequently......seems to be working to my advantage. Grin.

Truth is nobody really knows what's in store. BRP was very clear in their press release. They are out of business and won't be handling outboards any more, not even warranties. They "hired" Brunswick's Mercury marine to handle that for them. I would guess that when the last warranty runs out on 2020 models, Mercury's obligation will also end.

"Old" 'Rudes will always be serviceable because of an ample supply of aftermarket parts. I question the availability of all the later model E-tec stuff.

In my area we have 15 Merc dealers, 1 Yami, 1 Tohatsu and 1 BRP. In recent years 'Rudes were not a wise buy anyway, and Mercs have evolved so far ahead that they have become the best choice.

Service depends on the dealer...all the Junkrude dealers in my area have quit working on the DI motors and only honoring/servicing units in warranty. Parts depends on existing inventory as the dealers/ex reps I have spoken to said BRP is out of the outboard business for good. The GHOST project went away when they shut down the outboard line(GHOST was basically a modified copy of the early 70's Dolphin boat where a outboard was laid sideways in hull and attached to a outdrive) To answer the question of would I purchase it??? I myself would not...

I know of one dealer friend that gave up Evinrude dealer status 20 years ago with the early FICHT models.-----Refused to sell unproven technology to his customers.-----As it wasted too much time ( not paid for ) in talking to / helping people out.

And they have contracted to Merc to supply engines, not service.

Where have you heard something to the contrary ?

When did GHOST get axed?
In June, they said they were going forward with ghost in the same press release that announced evinrude's demise.

And what is cousin Tim retooling the Sturtevant plant for?
