Evinrude Model J6RCRM Prop Shaft does not touch F/N/D shift selector

Info requested on resetting/setting up the gear shaft/spring clutch assemble to connect to F/N/R yoke pin at end of lower unit gearhousing so the gear shaft will change gears.

Note the shift lever item is a 3 position yoke, part 29. Ot is mounted in the rear of the foot housing and looks like it presses a spring inside the propeller shaft allowing it to go between F/N/R. I Recently disassambled the lower unit to service seals, fluid, replace water impleller, etc. Removed Prop shaft, gears, clutch shifter assembly as one unit. The F/N/R Shift position rod from the power head was also removed from lower unit gear positions/yoke part #29. I have reconnected the shift rod to the gear positon yoke. It moves left and right when the properller shaft assembly is removed. Issue is when the lower unit gear/clutch assembly is reinstalled, I am not able to rotate the shift rod, causing it to move the gear postion yoke part 29 and it causing the propeller Clutch to compress the shifter spring to change gear postion between F/N/R.

Suggestions welcomed on resetting up the lower unit are appreciated. Engine is an Evinrude 6HP, model J6RCRM, believed to be a 1984/5 series engine. Thank you for your input!

Is #29 installed correctly?----I believe it is marked with " up " on it.-----Other than that is all easy and straight forward in my opinion.

Not sure what you did, but there is normally no reason to pull the shift shaft for most of the seals. When I remove by accident, I loosen the two screws holding the carrier together and pull it out a 1/4 inch or so then push the shift shaft in. Once I know its in where it needs to be, I tighten the screws.

Possibly it's just installed in the wrong place?

I have the long shaft version of the same engine,
There is no adjustment or "setting up" to be carried out.
If yours is not selecting the gears properly you have assembled something incorrectly.
The only thing I can think of is that you have fitted # 29, the shift cam, upside down as Racerone suggests.

I cannot relate what you are saying to a 1984 6 hp!

Morning and thanks for the prompt follow up. Regarding part #29, shift cam selector for F/N/R located in rear foot area of the lower unit. This item was not removed and is believed to be in the same position prior to the prop shaft/gear being pulled. Only variance now is knowing which position F/N/R it should be set when the propeller shaft is reinserted. Once the propeller/grears are reinstalled, the shaft rod when moved Left/Right will not move the cam in either F/N/R.
With out the shaft installed the Shift Rod moves the position cam Left and right. The cam seems to have flanges/knotchs, i'm guessing, one position if F, other N, Other- Reverse. Is there a perferred position the cam should be set?

IIRC there is no preferred position but I think I would set it in the forward gear position so that the spring is least compressed.
Once the gear case is all assembled the shift rod will not turn easily and normally you should not try to engage gear without the engine running but provided you turn the propshaft and don't force it you should be able to shift between the gears with vice grips on the shift rod.
