Hello all, hope I am posting in the correct place. I recently inherited an Evinrude Mate from my father who got it from my grandfather's sports shop. I'm told it was a display model that grampa hung on to when he closed the shop. Looks like maybe a 1939 or close to? Anyways, its been sitting on a shelf for decades and Im wondering if they are difficult to get up and running? Any advice on where to start would be much appreciated. I recently moved to a lake and thought it might be fun to use on a small boat. Thanks!

Is there a plate somewhere on that engine with its model number? If not... the old engines had the model number imprinted right into the aluminum casting just below the powerhead on the port side. Get that number to us.

The carburetor will no doubt require reworking... also the coils etc will need looking at along with a compression check. Spray some premix into the cylinder for lubrication before the compression check.

The coils were a weak spot in those little buggers. I know of several that have had their coils rewound. Otherwise, they're quite simple to work on. Not much to them!

Cool find! I'm not sure the exact fuel mixture but I am guessing it might me somewhere between 16:1 to 24:1 gas / oil mix.

Also it looks like you have a Volkswagen "Thing". Neat.
