I changed the gear lube in the lower unit and it was very nasty. Don't know the last time it was changed before I purchased it. The top vent/fill line plug has a black rubber gasket on the plug and there is a plastic gasket that is around the threads of the fill line hole.

On the bottom drain plug, the plug has the black rubber gasket, but I did not notice a plastic gasket like the top plug has. Is the bottom plug also suppose to have a plasic gasket in addition to the plug gasket? Thanks for any info.

There should be 1 little gasket per screw. Buy the new ones @ OMC/BRP for a less than a buck each. They should be changed regularly. Also if you have not refilled the LU yet, put some solvent in first, turn it by hand a bunch of times to clean it up, then drain it out and refill with good LU oil. That'll clean the gunk out some.

Some plugs had a gasket made of gasket material.
Some plugs had a gasket made of a white plastic material.
Some plugs had a rubber o-ring in a groove.

Any of them will work. But none of them need more than one seal.

The top plug is Vent only. Drain and fill from the bottom plug.

Replace OEM plug gaskets EVERY time you have the plug out.
