Hello, I am starting to rebuild a 52-54 3hp Lightwin and am missing a couple of parts. I am missing the 'Armature Plate Handle Assembly’ (part # 277164), and likely a couple of other parts relating to it. This is the handle that contros the START/SLOW/STOP/FAST
See this page for pics; http://www.patio-guy.com/Lightwin/Lightwin.htm I need to figure out exactly what I am missing and if I can get replacment parts before I start putting money into the rebuild kit. The motor seems to be in very good condition, I would hate to see this one junked. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt Anderson

Well your parts go beyond Iboats' stock. try dougrussell.com, they have part diagrams and you can order right from the picture. Still waiting for iboats to get something like that....

Is what you've pictured all you've got? That is to say, you don't seem to have any of the ignition system, fuel tank, pull start, or lower side engine covers. If you're missing all that, you'll want a parts motor to feed off of. Try twin city, featherweightoutboards.com, vintageoutboard.com, laingsoutboards.com, theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com. Or look around locally and see if you can't find a parts motor. There were thousands of those little 3hp engines sold and many years have interchangeable parts.

Sorry I was not clear. I do not have any ignition parts; coils, points or plug wires, but those can be replaced easily. My problem is the Armature handle or 'control arm' that allows you to select SLOW/START/FAST/STOP. I just realized after studying the diagrams more that the main part this motor is missing is the Armature Plate and Post Assembly, part # 580121. This is a bummer, looks like it will be much harder to avoid this motor going in the junk pile.
Thanks,
Matt Anderson

You're not going to want to buy those parts peicemeal, or it'll end up costing you an arm and a leg. But watch ebay and eventually it'll all come along. Email sellers who are selling off bits of a 3hp and see if they have the parts you need. Buy them in units.
Or phone around to the local outboard shops and see if you can't find out where the old dead outboards go. Then pull a 3hp from their junk yard. I don't think I would pay any more than $50 for one.
I see a tank for $10 and $20 right now. Nothing else yet. You'll need the flywheel + flywheel nut, armature plate (complete with cam, control arm, etc), points cam (fits on crankshaft), and pull starter.
If it's got good compression it may be worth the leg work. While it's no powerhouse, the 3hp is a nice running engine.

I have the flywheel, but not the armature plate or control handle. A rebuild was obviously started at some time and stopped, without all the parts put back together. Really has me bummed out, thought I had a gem on my hands. The outer sheetmetal is in great shape and the motor has good compression. Guess I'll start hawking eBay and the local shops.
Thanks for the advice.
Matt Anderson

One will turn up cheap. They always do. Don't forget that cam that fits on the crankshaft if you're missing it!
