Re: Evinrude Light Twin Outboard (ELTO) 25hp year??
I first posted this to the "Other outboard brands" thread because I have the owners guide and it is a Canadian made motor (Peterborough) under the company "ELTO Motors" - a 37.5 cubic inch with 2-7/8 bore x 2-3/4 stroke. The Patent date identified on the motor is 1958 but is that actually the year it was made? I mentioned "ELTO" to the local boating store here and they have never heard of it.
With a little more research I found the break out for ELTO as in the subject line but there has been little evidence to prove that is an actual "Evinrude" other then it having been made by Ole Evinrude. The following para was on another site that gives a little history of ELTO.
"Ole Evinrude sold the Evinrude outboard business in 1913 due to health issues. After a few years of rest and retirement he started his second company Elto (Evinrude Light Twin Outboard) in 1922. In a couple of years he was second only to Johnson in production - outselling his old company Evinrude. Eventually he would buy his original company back, purchase Johnson out of bankruptcy and (after a couple of name changes) form the Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC). Unfortunately by the 1940's Elto was reduced to a "value" brand and, after being relegated to Canada, gone by the mid 1950's. A sad end since Elto's start was so promising."
After a little more research I have found that it may be the Cdn cousin to the Gale Products line (1958 - Buccaneer that has a model #22DE15B) but I have yet to confirm that.
Thanks for your help, Len
