I'm looking at buying a 40hp Lark 6 and it has a "charging device" - is it a generator like on the older models or had they gone to alternators at that point? I assume it is not needed for the engine to run? I would prefer to just remove it. Any problems with that?

I'm not a lark wizzard but if you had a alternator type system there would be a external rectifer on the engine to convert the AC to DC.Hope this helps Ted

Your Lark VI is Selectric Shift. It has a DC generator. It will run without a battery, but a fully charged battery is necessary to put it in gear. A weak/discharged battery will allow the electric clutches to slip, causing severe damage. Believe me, you don't want that. Best you don't toss the generator.
