evinrude lark 5 issue????

i have a evinrude 40 hp outboard im trying to wire up. the two black wires that come from the alternator stator? im not sure were they go. if anyone could help. i know they go from motor to ignition switch but cant determine witch one goes were.
motor is a 1962 2cyl thanks

Well, a 1962 Lark doesn't have an alternator. They'll take a generator, mounted on the Port side of the engine, opposite of the starter. Those two black wires you see coming from your stator plate should be the ones that go to your ignition switch. In an outboard set up, the off position in the ignition switch will connect a ground to those wires, unlike an automotive ignition, that simply stops the power to the ignition. Do not attach power to those black wires. You'll fry your coils out in a blink of an eye:eek:

Attached below is a wiring diagram that will give you a good idea how to wire up your motor. Different year, but the concept is the same.:cool:
