hello and thank you for looking. i have a 1980 Evinrude 85hp. this is new to me and i do not know the history. first time out all was good as long as i let it warm up after each time shutdown. next time out, starts at dock fine. take a 10 minute ride cut it off and it has difficulty starting. it finally starts but...when i try to take off it just dies like it is starving for fuel. this is tried until the battery dies and i get a tow back to dock. i had left the key on the night before so i called it weak batteries, charged them and dismissed it. went out again with no problems. fourth trip, i get a pretty good distance from the dock, fish awhile and get ready to go when the boat wont accelerate without stalling. finally it wont turn over so i make it to dock and pull the engine cover. i get a click from the solenoid and that's it. i mess with it a bit, checking connections and bumping it with a screwdriver (like an automobile). after awhile of messing with it it suddenly starts. elated i take off and get up to speed. cruising about 42 mph i approach a large number of boats and back off the throttle a bit and it suddenly dies. now i have nothing. another tow is in order. now when i turn it over the solenoid clicks. i pulled the solenoid off another motor i have and still the same issue. as i write this i am thinking it must be some kind of ground. any ideas. sorry for the long post. i am also not convinced the thermostat is installed. maybe it does not ever warm up. that might explain the hard starting and running it

New to me gets a decent going over first.
Battery (I like to buy new)
remove and file all elec connections til shiny, from battery onwards.
Compression, spark test , charge test, rebuild carbs.Check lower gear oil.
Plugs etc.

I'm confident you will find the problem if you do all these simple tests.

Sounds like a battery or starter problem. Could be in the wiring or the engine is locked up.(hope not)

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Just my guess but I'm thinking either a bad battery cable or a weak ground.

follow up: I cleaned all connections from the battery back to the motor ( i use an angle head grinder with a brillo pad on it works great!!) but still just a click. i then went through the steps in the manual with my trusty voltmeter and was only getting 5.4 volts at the starter. so i just happen to have a starter in stock and i swapped it. SHAZAAAM!!! turns over fine now. thanks for the replies. i also have a couple 85 hp johnsons if anyone needs one.

Glad your engine is fixed. I am having the same problem. It is a 1998 Evinrude 150 hp. The boat was going down the lake and died. It finally restarted and went 1/2 a mile and died again for good. All I get now is a click from the starter. Batteries are ok and when it was turning over it had spark. Why would your starter make your boat turn off?
