Evinrude jumping out of gear

My 1978 25hp Evinrude is trying to jump out of forward gear while going across the water. A few times it has jumped into nuetral completely, but mostly its just for a second then it goes back in gear. Is there any linkage adjustment or is something wore out. I appreciate your help.

The motors of that vintage used a "2-lug" clutch dog. Eventually, the ends of the lugs wear off and become rounded, that's when they jump out of gear. There is no shift-linkage adjustment on those models. <br /><br />-John

The bummer is the clutch and gear must be replaced together, which isn't really cheap.
