I've ripped down my 1977 55hp Evinrude, and yep the head gasket was blown. Thanks for the help there. OK, my book says to use some "OMC Gasket Sealing Compound" coated over the head gasket. Is this still standard practice? Or are the newer gaskets ok with out it?

Are you sure about that? I've always been told NOT to use sealant on head gaskets.

Some newer head gaskets got the goo already on them. A very LIGHT coat don't hurt on ones that don't.

Thanks for the quick replies. Yep checked head for warpage, all OK. Theres a bit of cancer eating into the side of the pot; so I think that may have caused it :( <br />Time to get a batch of goo for it; and then upgrade to a bigger boat.
