Evinrude fowling 2 plugs. Why?

I've got a friend that brought his boat to me, he fowles 2 plugs every couple of days, any idea why? Mixture? That's all the info I have, the head doesn't look like it's been or getting hot I ran it for a few and it never heated up. If it is a mixture problem for that dedicated carb how do I go about adjusting it? Could it be a stuck float? I should pull the carbs off but I thought i would ask first. I'm sure it could be 3-4 possibilitys. Where should I start. Thanks in advance. The modle number of the engine is E115TLCRD. VRO V4. He says the two lower plugs go first the a day or two latter the uppers go.

Are the plugs on the same bank?

Plug fouling happens when either the mixture is too rich or the combustion chamber is too cold.

So here is what you check (starting with the easy stuff):

1) Are you using the correct spark plugs. Should be QL77JC4. If the plugs are different and the numbers in the middle are less than 77, then you are using a colder plug and subjecting the motor to fouling.

2) Is the carburetor low speed adjusted properly. Search for Joe Reeves carburetor adjustment procedure on this site to make sure the rich/lean mixture you are using is correct.

3) Are you using the right oil to gas ratio. It should be 50:1. Unlikely the problem but could be.

4) Is your thermostat operating properly. One of the reason's OMC puts in a thermostat is to prevent fouling. If it has failed open, you will foul plugs a lot quicker.

5) Now a rich mixture or a cold engine doesn't actually foul a plug. What happens is the carbon that is created in the combustion chamber is not burned properly. As this electrically conductive carbon deposits on the spark plug it grounds out the electrode and we have what is known as a fouled plug. With this in mind, when was the last time you did a proper de-carb of the motor with OMC engine tuner or seafoam. Search this site for the procedures. An overly carboned up motor can foul plugs and a decarb should be done anyway as regular maintenance.

Those are my ideas for you. Good luck.

Just guesses ;)

On the V-4 if they are in the same bank I would feel the heads and see if they feel the same while running...... there is a thermostat for each side and maybe on bank is running an a different temperature.

If it is the two top or two bottom then I would rebuild the carb.

Check to see if the motor has the "economizer" system too.... it may need troubleshooting.

He says the bottom to go first then the top two, the top two last longer. So a good starting point would be rebuild carbs or try the sea foam first? Also I will look up Joe Reeves post. You guys are fast with answers, thanks ;)

I fired up the engine for a short duration and one bank if you will the right side if your looking at the back of the engine got warmer than the other side, not fast but still heated up more than the other.??????? Water pump? Mixture? I know I'm asking a lot. Thanks

P.S doing all this typing from my phone. Can't do it like the kids now a days.

Thermostats and water diverter's for the temperature difference .... something is restricting the water flow.

Running sea foam through the fuel system does not do as good of a job if things are clogged. You really need to take apart the carbs to clean them.
