I didn't think my motor tilted up, but last night, I tried it and it worked...isn't there a release to cause it to tilt up, or does it just do it with a slight upward pull?

While I was trying to get the motor tilted, I moved some adjustment on the side of the motor...on the opposite side from the gear shift..it is near the fuel plug in...I moved this do-hickey after I had the motor turned off. What is this knob and should it be in any certain position ??? The next time I take the boat out will be on vacation, and I want to make sure I didn't do something I shouldn't of.

Finally, with the serial number, can I tell what year the motor is ???

Thanks for any help...and if someone had a manual for this motor and was willing to copy it, I'd pay for the copying and the postage...thanks.

Re: Evinrude Fleetwin Aquasonic Question

Tommy:

Those older OMC motors did not have a positive locking tilt mechanism. Rather the screw or "hinge" which the motor tilts on has a tension adsjustment. By simply loosening or tightening the nut on the tilt screw the tilt characteristics are changed. Basically you need to set it at a point where the motor will support itself when tilted, but still be loose enough to tilt back down again.

If I remember correctly the only adjustment on the throttle side of the motor is for the low speed timing. Basically the small plastic knob at the motor end of the tiller allows some movement (advancement/retarding) of the timing plate. Best thing is probably to get it out on the water and play with the adjustment until it seems correct.

Last thing... If you keep an eye on Ebay you may find a copy of the manual for your motor. I have found several old ones there. Also, with the model and serial number the year indeed can be determined.

I hope this helps.

Re: Evinrude Fleetwin Aquasonic Question

After re-reading your message and my reply, I realized the need for further clarification about the tilt... The tilt on these motors did have a locking mechanism in the down position. The lock activating lever should be a located in the front of the motor near the carrying handle. However there is no lock in the up position. This is only held by the screw tension.
