Hi I have a 2000 ficht 225 and cannot seem to drop the lower unit.Im dropping it to replace the water impeller and have done it before on older outboards but this one is giving me a problem. I took all usual bolts off to drop it but it only came down a few inches. It seems the rod nearest the boat is holding it on(I believe). Like I said all bolts are removed. I have tried all combinations of reverse, drive, neutral, ect but no release of the unit. So how do you disconnect this thing thanks!

I have done some reading of taking of pins and 4 bolts under the cowling, ect. Where should I start to look under the cowling. Are there any videos on how to do this? Thank you in advance.

Did it not occur to you that the shift linkage would need to be disconnected as well? Oh the value of a service manual.

michael, silvertip is correct. An OEM manual is worth it's weight in gold. I have a '98 Johnson 150 and the procedure for disengaging the shift lever is very simple and only involves the removal of a cotter pin. Use the BRP parts site to view an exploded image of your motor. Once you find the correct model# look under the cylinder and crankcase tab to locate the shift rod lever which needs to be disengaged to drop the lower unit. Once again, the OEM service manual has easy to follow directions and plenty of images.
Hope this helps,

I still haven't figured out why they spend money on printing service manuals. Seems nobody wants them
