I was able to get the fuel line for my 6 hp Evinrude from Wallymart so ready to get it going - the model number is 6802C - is 50:1 the correct mix for this older engine?

OK - I need a lesson here - when it says 50:1 or whatever the oil mix is - how do you calculate how much oil you need to add to 1 Gallon of gasoline?

Thank you,

Re: Evinrude Fisherman Fuel Oil mix

If this is your first time out with it, you might want to run it a little heavy. 50:1 fuel/oil mix calculates like this. 50 parts fuel to 1 part oil. So in other words if you had say a fifty gallon fuel tank, you would need 1 gallon of oil. So if theres 128 ounces in a gallon, you would need approximately two and a half ounces of oil. but as I said, if this is your first run, run 1 gallon to 3 ozs. Better to be heavy on oil than to light. post back and good luck.

I don't understand why you would recommend using more oil for the first time out. Doesn't make any sense.

Most outboard oil containers have ratio charts printed on them. Just follow the mixing directions. No need to dig out your calculator.

What year is that motor? Some older motors like mine require a 24:1 fuel/oil mix. 50:1 may be waaaay to lean and you would burn up your motor.

By all accounts, the Evinrude 6802C is a 1968 motor..... I don't have information on fuel oil ratio for that year, so I'm with tbfosback, ask someone who knows before going to 50:1

Yes the outboard in question is a 1968 the recommended fuel mix is 50:1. For 1 Gallon of gas that would be 2.56 ounces of TC-W3. However the rule of thumb is to err on the side of caution and mix a 1/3 of a cup of oil to 1 Gallon which would be 2.66 ounces. You are better to run too rich than not enough oil, even running 24:1 in modern outboard will not hurt the engine, it will smoke a little bit more but it won't kill the engine.
