Evinrude Fisherman 6HP won't run on shift or slow setting

I have a 1965 Fisherman. I gave $75 for it. Replaced the water pump and thermostat. She runs good put only with the throttle turned to "start" If I kick it to "shift" or "slow" she dies. Do I need a new carb?

No, you don't need a new carb. Sounds like you may need to clean the carb and do a "linkage and synchronization" adjustment.

Instructions are in the OEM Service Manual you should have.

in agreement with JB on service manual....if you'll google..Leeroy's Ramblings...scroll to his outboard motor repair/maintenance section and read his 6 hp. writings...also do a search funtion here on 6 hp. models as there are many threads concerning them

If it seems like it is idling smooth and at the correct idle RPM when the throttle is at "Start", then it may simply be out of adjustment. If it will just not idle low, then the low speed circuit in the carb may be clogged and the carb will have to be removed and cleaned.

Today I took the phillips head screw out of the tiller handle pulled it off. The feel when turning it was kind of tight. On the inside, the spring was on the outside of the plastic bushing. I reversed this putting the spring in 1st and then the plastic bushing. Started the motor and got a lot better response and control from the handle. It ran a lower rpm. Place it in forward and reverse in a barrel and it did not stall. Now I can turn it down to slower rpm and get it to run.
