Losing power after running about 12 gallons of gas. Approx 400 hours on engine. RPM drops from 5400 to 4000 and misses. Our boat is a Seaswirl 2300 cuddy. The dealer has had it in 6-7 times for the same problem. Fuel lines and pumps have been replaced as have several injectors, plugs etc and they are unable to determine or remedy the problem. Bombardier sent out a regional service representative and to asses the situation. The motor is under warranty until Feb. 2002.
Is there any recourse available to us as in a replacement motor or powerhead? Are there any applicable lemon laws? Any thoughts, suggestions or solutions on this would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Evinrude Ficht 200

Ahoy, Kevin. That's what happens when all the techs know how to do is replace stuff without any idea what is wrong. That might be the case here.

If your engine will burn 12 gallons running fine before it starts giving trouble it probably isn't the engine.

Take along a 6 gal portable next time you are out. When she starts misbehaving, disconnect your built-in and hook up the portable. A fifth of Chivas 12 year-old says she will go right back to purring.

Then clean out your tank vent line, replace the pickup tube and purge the tank. . .completely.

Good luck,
Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

ahoy JB,
Thats a good idea, the thought had crossed my mind, however they said they had replaced the pickup pump and injector pump but not the vent line, tube and purged the tank. I will gladly send you the Chivas when it works.
thanks,
Kevin

Re: Evinrude Ficht 200

kevin,

I'm having a similar problem to yours perhaps not as pronounced though.
I occasionaly lose around 800-1000 rpms with my 4 stroke 90(merc) for no apprent reason. At least that's what the shop concluded today, they of course didn't find anything wrong with my engine after trying it on the water for 1/2 an hour. Gee what a surprise they didn't find anything wrong with the engine?!! Maybe its because I'm passed my 1 year limited warranty?

So just to be on the safe side they changed my fuel line/primer bulb for free. I suppose I can't complain about that, but they didn't really address my rpm problem. I told them the problem seems to occur later in the day after running the engine for a couple of hours or more. So they told me to come back in the spring if I still have the problem and if necessary they will change my fuelpump/s for free.
Well I suppose nothing is perfect..especially new technology. Maybe I should of bought a Honda...

If the fuel system idea doesn't solve it, try marinemechanic.com. I was browsing through it the other day and noticed a list of the latest FICHT recalls. Maybe you'll find something there. Good luck!

Kevin, I think you missed what Corn was saying. He's saying you have something in your tank. Lots of boat manufactures will install a screen over the fuel pick up pipe in the tank. After you have been running the 12 gals worth it gradually collects the crap around this screen and staves the engine for fuel. You should have Racor water seperating filter on there and you make sure you have no screen on the pick up pipe in the tank. The Racor will take care of anything coming out of the tank.

There is no such thing as a pick up pump. If the vent line is cloged it might take burning 12 gals of fuel before enough vaccum is created to starve the engine. You might try opening the fuel tank fill cap when you have the problem again. If it sounds like it's sucking air in you found the problem.
