Are there still parts available for these? The motor is clean and all there, i will order a manual go with the awakening steps and see what happens.

Oh yeah. Plenty of parts still around for these guys. In fact, you can probably find many of them here at iboats. Read the "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard" in the Sticky for this forum. Keep us posted.

Re: Evinrude fastwin 15hp questions

yup. They require a bit of routine maintenance, but in the long run they are way chaper and easier to own and operate than many new motors. Plus, once yout learn to fix the basics on these guys you will be able to fix virtually any OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) motor from the 50's thru the 70's. Well worth the time and effort to learn about thes little guys. Keep us posted.

Re: Evinrude fastwin 15hp questions

Parts are relatively easy to get. Most wearable parts are still available at the dealer as they were the same for decades... I have a '53 Fastwin I was using last week until our river froze up and some of the later 18's which are slightly bigger an engine but basically the same. Good simple strong engines as you've heard.

And I have the parts manual if you want it. If yes, PM me your request and email.

what do you guys think should tear in to the carb and clean it before i try starting it? the guy i got it from said he had it going 3 years ago, i would put some carb cleaner through it before. or should i just do a tear down?

There is a really good chance that the carb will need cleaning.... tear down and clean all jets and passages not just waving a can of carb cleaner at it.

But why not put some fresh fuel (20:1) in it and give it a try.

I'd give it a try... Some run fine... Some don't... No harm done in trying... And I'm lazy :)

Re: Evinrude fastwin 15hp questions

Guss, you're right. 24:1 is the correct mixture. 20:1 is a little lean. Never use LESS oil than reccomended. Some folks even run 16:1 in older motors to give them extra lubrication, but that's just as a precaution. 24:1 is the least amount of oil you want to use. When you get her runing, make sure it is in a test tank. NEVER run out of the water. Don't be alarmed if she smokes a bit. That's just the oil in the gas burnning out. You will also collect gas/oil droplets in the water of the test tank you use, but again that's normal. Once you get her running, I would still give the carb a good cleaning and/or install a new carb kit. It's cheap and easy to do yourself and you can probably get it right here at iboats for about $25 or so. Well worth the investment. Keep us posted.

20:1 IS MORE oil that 24:1

The advice from Evinrude is that 1959 to 1963 use 24:1 but 1958 and prior use 20:1.

http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Owners-Center/FAQ/OilAndFuel

It is true that some older motors would have used 16:1 originally

Re: Evinrude fastwin 15hp questions

That is the advice. I personally use 30:1 with full synthetic tcw-3 in all my 50's engines. and I have a lot of them... Never had a problem or an oil related failure and full synthetic smokes less... why 30:1 you might ask? well up here in Canada they do everything in silly metric which are litres and I have a 30 litre gas container so I put 1 litre of tcw3 in it! Then I use it for everything. Even my 2 stroke lawnmower!
