1958. Have fun! OMC 18HP outboards are addictive though, so watch out. So are the Iboats forums. Welcome aboard. There are folks on this forum who can answer ANYTHING about your motor (I'm not one of them but learning).

WOW! I greatly appreciate the fast reply! I can see know that this forum, as well as the motor itself is going to take up a lot of my time.
Didn't realize the motor was such classic! I can't wait to get it running.

geeko,

Don't go too fast. There are some things you want to check out-first-before you try to fire it up.

First, is the compression good?

Second, do you have good spark?

Let us know, there's more to do after those checks. We wouldn't want you to melt it down on the first run.

Hi Geeko.

Welcome to iboats. :)

When you do fire her up, be sure to use a 24:1 fuel mix. That is 1qt. TC-W3 outboard oil to 6 gallons of 87 octane unleaded regular.

Good luck. :)

Re: Evinrude Fast Twin 18 - What Year??

Thanks for the advise. So far all I've done is see if the thing will actually turn.It doesn't appear to have seized up.I opened up the cover and the engine itself is amazingly clean. It has been garaged.I've removed the spark plugs (which were pretty brittle) and squirted a little oil in there on the advise of a friend.I do know that the last time it was used was in 1996.Since aquiring it last week, I've done little else other than take it off of the transom and mount it on to a stand.Have not tried the electric start, etc.I used to dink around with street rod motors as a teenager.Don't know squat about these thing, but I'm VERY interested.
Not sure exactly how to check the compression other than have somebody turn it while I've got my finger in the plug hole...
No idea if there's a spark, since I've tossed the obviously rotten plugs. Can everybody tell by now that I'm a bit green with this stuff? Been using Minn-Kotas on Canoes for years. That's about the extent of my boat/motor knowledge.
A good manual would be nice.Starting to think I've bitten off more than I can chew. Maybe I should stick with the computer programming, but I don't seem to get a lot of sun or catch a lot of trout that way.
Always open to good advise....

geeko,

Manuals here.

http://www.iboats.com/boatproducts/mallsearch/evinrude_outboard_manual/

You can pick up a compression tester at an auto parts store for $20.00 or so. But, not totally necessary. Of you have a "huff" in each hole, it's probably OK.

Use Champion plugs ONLY. Any John/Rude dealer will have the right ones. While you're there, pick up a water pump impeller and lower unit fill/drain plug seals.

Good luck with your 18hp fastwin.
I "found" a 1957 Evinrude fastwin 18 at the back of a barn last week. Other than cobwebs it looks good but I have not tried to turn it over. Some of the electrics will be brittle. The red fuel tank has rusted through in places and so I have to find another. A two pipe pressure system is served from a small button pump by the handle of the tank. this will be a bit of a challenge to find.
be lucky sgp

A wealth of info from everybody!!
My fuel tank with this thing looks brand new,due to it being in the back of the boat for so long.It actually has a half tank of gas in it,which I need to dispose of.The fuel lines look pretty good as well.
DJ-Wish I had your time and knowledge....
