Evinrude ETEC 115 - running then goes into "Safe Mode" why?

Love the motor - no problems (especially during last year). Took it out and after going about 4 miles we decided to come down off full speed as we were approaching the shoreline. The motor would not go into neutral. It stayed at 1600 RPM. After repeated tries we turned the motor off, put it into neutral, restarted the motor and it would only go into Safe Mode. No alarms sounded. When the motor was turned on the lights across board came on, went off, came back on for about 15 seconds and back off.

Let it sit for awhile, restarted and it worked OK. After a few miles when we tried slowing it happened again. After a few tries we let it sit for awhile and it worked again. We limped home and parked it.

Do I take it out to someone with the odds that it won't happen for them? Is this something that I need to talk to a dealer about? Are there some things I can check myself??? Would appreciate some guidance.

Thanks

Rob

What year is your Etec? The dealer will be able to do a diagnostic and pull the error codes from the EMM.

Does your ETEC still have warranty? If so, take it to a dealership for diagnosis. If not, still take it to a dealership.

The day of the shade tree boat mechanic is now over when it comes to problems. (Same thing with automobiles.)

The CAN/BUS electronics of modern outboard motors changed the game. Expensive scanners and the proper training required to diagnose such problems only can be done in dealerships at this time. And, it's all expensive business.

What you may have is a sticky throttle linkage or throttle position sensor that is stiff. If you could not shift out of gear and the motor stayed at a higher rpm, that points to throttle problems. The motor also will not accelerate if it is started with the throttle advanced or sticking open.

Have a trained tech check the linkage and TPS for you and get if fixed right away. A sticking throttle could result in a dangerous situation.

It is a 2007 - had the 3 year maintenance already. Thanks!

Get into a dealer and have him get any codes that are in your EMM with his laptop. I wouldn't run it before doing this.
