I have an evinrude electric shift control for a 72 50HP. It has the three push buttons. On the wiring side of the switch there are 5 spade terminals. 2 under the forward button, 2 under the neutral button and one under the reverse button. how can I test the switches with an ohmeter, what hapens when each button is pushed? And can anyone provide a good diagram. I have three different service manuals and none show this paticular terminal arrangement of 5. Three of the wires were broken when I got this switch so guess i need a complete diagram. Thanks

Re: Evinrude electric shift switch testing

i have a few of these motors, and those switches are worthless... to make it work better and easier, go to boat store, twhrow down 10 bucks and get one of these
go to www.boatus.com and look up item number 565525. it is a simple 3 way push /pull style switch.
im asumming you understand the wiring for the lower unit, so ill skip all that....
wire the switch so that, when pushed all the way in, its shuts off all voltage , therefore being in forward gear, pulled out to number 1 postion, it is nuetral, and pulled out to number 2 position it is in reverse.

i mounted all mine in the control box just under where the cable comes out. or you can mount in dash board, where ever.
those switches are all very old and even if yours works now, it soon wont. save some trouble in advance and get a switch.

email me direct if you need more info on this, i can sedn you pics of what i did.
phatmanmike@yahoo.com

Re: Evinrude electric shift switch testing

The 2 extra connections are for the "start in gear protection" so it will start in neutral only.

Be careful not to confuse your unit with an electric shift model. You have a hydro-electric and is completely different. The shift switches will not interchange although they look identical.

The switch set up phatmanmike suggests will work very well but you will have no protection from the motor starting in gear. That switch set up was used on race boats years ago -- you can see why you have to be very careful when using it on a recreational boat.

Good luck!
