Evinrude E-Tec?

O.K., I'm at the boat show this weekend and saw lots of Evinrude E-Tec 2 stroke outboard motors, and got me wondering, are they really lighter, more efficient, less-polluting, better, etc. than the other fuel injected 2 strokes on the market? How are they different? Anybody had any real-life experience with these, specifically the 90HP? I notice their 90HP is 320lbs., a full 50lbs. heavier than my 90C Yamaha...where's the 50 extra pounds? Any ideas guys? Thanks!

Re: Evinrude E-Tec?

The added weight is in the computer and direct injection hardware, Robert. Be sure you understand the differences between fuel injected and Direct Fuel Injected.

Consider all of the Direct Fuel Injected 2 strokes competitive with EFI 4 strokes as far as weight and performance go. The 2 strokes require and use oil and the 4 strokes have a bazillion parts.

Re: Evinrude E-Tec?

I can't speak to any of the specifics but I have a 2006 90hp ETEC. The only thing I have to compare against is an older 85 Chrysler. With that Chrysler we used about 6 gallons of gas/hour. With the ETEC it seems to be about 4 gallons, and we're all a lot fatter than when we used the Chrysler. I've only used the XD100 oil but usage seems to be very light. The fact that it's so computer driven scares me but I've had no problems yet. It is very quiet, a couple friends of mine have been really surprised by how quiet it really is as well as the hole shot. I'm not sure it's the greatest thing since sliced bread but I love mine, it's been a great motor.

As for the weight, Pretty sure they're lighter than all of the other outboards that meet the California emissions ratings for 2012, definitely lighter than all the 4 strokes. The Evinrude site compares weight of 5 90 hp motors and the 2 stroke Yammy is the only motor lighter.

Re: Evinrude E-Tec?

Thanks guys!..so it seems that the E-Tec 90HP might be an alternative to someone wanting/needing to replace a no-longer-available 2 stroke, carbed, premix outboard. I understand that the E-Tec direct injection is directly into the combustion chamber and their oil is injected into the air inlet for crank area lubrication, still have transfer ports like any 2 stroke. Man, 50 lbs. seems like a lot of injector plumbing and computers! But 320lbs. is still pretty light compared to the 4 strokes! Thanks again!:)

.

The Chryslers, as Frank will attest, are cross flow designs and cross flows are not fuel efficient. So that is realistically not a valid comparison.....yes you had one and that is your only yardstick but I had two and had the same problem and my only yardstick. Does that make sense? I used to compare mine to loopers of the day and they failed miserably. Have no idea as to comparing them with the FI 2 cycle engines of today.

no ! the oil is distributed and injected directly to the parts that need lubrication- bearings, piston rings etc. it is never mixed with the fuel or sprayed via the intake. thats a bix difference to the older carbed engines with automixing.

If you look at an E-tec lower unit and the lower unit on any other 75/90 HP engine you should immediately be aware of where some of the weight is. These are beefy units.

Frank is the resident Chrysler expert and he said that all Chryslers (I had 2) were cross flow. Your ETEC is sophistically fueled and cannot in any way be compared to the technology (lack thereof...his words....simple design) of the Chrysler. I thought I already answered this once??????????????????

Check your Yammie's cubes. For the 90 you are sorta shy....cubes are weight and the Yammie does not appear to have any weight wasted in the running gear or in the cubes. My 90 hp triple Merc weighs 300#, naturally aspired, and has a lot more cubes than the Yammie; don't remember the exact number but enough to consider. Cubes make the hole shot as the OEM's found out on high perf. bass boats like in one case of Merc/Mariner, upping the cubes of their 150's from 2L to 2.5L.

Re: Evinrude E-Tec?

What's the XD-50 adjustment?

The E-Tech needs to be ajusted to use either the XD50 (approx 50:1) or the XD100 (approx 100:1) oil. I have been told by and E-Tech owner that when ajusted for XD100 only BRP oil can be used, but at XD50 some synthetic alternative oil can be used if you are out of XD50.

Re: Evinrude E-Tec?

Just for the heck of it I checked the gph on 11 Etec 90 tests. average wot gph was 8.04 with a high of 9.20
and a low of 7.63. gph is actually about 9% Not hard to figure on a 90 but a little tougher with a 125.
I think that shows that modern motors do a little better than the 10% of horsepower rule of thumb
but it still is good for quick in your head estimates.
