I have a motor that I need help with.
It is an evinrude / triumph 55hp.
It is a 3 cylinder I think from the late 60’s

I need help finding out what year that it is and the model number.

Some nice person stole the lower unit off of it just after I bought the boat.
I have asked around at boat shops and they are no help. They just tell me it is old and not worth the money, The thing is I do not have a lot of money to replace it with a new one.
So I will be doing the work myself.

Does the lower unit have to be off of the same size motor or could I use one off of a 40hp motor.

Also where do I measure for to find out if it is a long or short shaft.

Thank you for any help you can give me

Roger J
The Model # is 55973A the other # is J06213

Roger...

Without the model number we can't help much. Look on the transom plate or the engine's freeze plugs...look anywhere, but find the model number. From that we can tell you a lot about what you're dealing with.

Walt

Roger
Hope you find some thing, I have been told but cannot confirm that the lower units will enerchange from 1958 to 1962 50-100 hp. several locals say they all have the same shaft and bolt patern. Also a number of people in my area are replacing with jet pumps. The local dealer (of the pumps) says you gain speed and hp, reading this board leads me not to beleave the local dealer!
Richard

That dealer must dealing something else as well, like crack. Jet drives take 30% more power than a prop, so you lose 30% of your power by swapping a prop for a jet drive on the same motor. They are good for shallow water, and more safe than props though...

Good Luck.........55hp 3 cylinders were made in 68 and 69 and she's what they call a Selectroshift(push button shift). You are going to have to find an electric shift gearcase for her. Any gearcase from 68 to 71-72 on engines from 55hp up to 125hp will fit it. You can't convert it to a mech shift gearcase because it does not have the shifting mech built into the engines lower power head.

I should have mentioned going to http://www.aomci.org/ Thats the antique outboard club page and go to the "ask a member" section and ask what years fit. Then go to the "Webvertise classified adds" and post what you are looking for. It's free and anyone can post there. It's takes a day or two for it to come up, but if someone has the gearcase they will get back to you.

If it isn't obvious, Roger, you can use a lower end from a Johnson Electro-Shift of the same period.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
