So i was fortunate enough to get a couple motors from a co-worker. He gave me a decent and running 9.9 and a 15 parts motor. I have to replace a few seals and water pump on the 9.9, but overall its in good shape. The 15 is pretty much junk. Looks like it blew right up lol not much salvageable on it. I notice on both motors that where the engine leg connects to the steering/mounting bracket, there are zip ties holding the top. If I pull it apart a but it looks like there are screws not holding it top of the bracket? Its like this on both motors, and I know its not right. But I can't see how to get to the bolts either. I'll post a picture in a minute to make it easier to see what I'm talking about.

Thanks, Walter

Re: Evinrude 9.9

I did see your post but it is difficult for me to respond in any meaningful way. I've never seen the zip tie method of holding a lower unit together. LOL. My first thought would be to ask the fellow who gave it to you what was the reason to use the zip ties. If you showed us better pictures it might help (of the bolts your talking about). Best of luck. Rick.

Here's a better picture I think. It's right where the top of the mount enters the top of the leg. If I pull on the engine it will move in and out.

I suspect the upper mounts may be shot......what are the respective model numbers of your motors?

You sure it wasn't just zip tied together to keep the mount from flopping around and stuff while in storage?

Sorta like taping the drawers on a desk shut while you move it, I guess.

If you remove the ties, you may find the motor is loose in the pivot tube. If that be the case, it needs new bushings.

Re: Evinrude 9.9

Some serious issues happening. I rebuilt the lower unit, fired it up. It runs good, but I have exhaust coming from that same mount, and a weird oil coming out the exhaust. Time to pull the powerhead and see what's going on. When I cut the zip ties I can move the power head in and out a lot. Something's messed up. I'll pull apart the beat up 15 first to see how to do it and for parts

Anyone have a tutorial link for pulling the powerhead? Doesn't seem too hard but...

I assume the lowr unit has come off again?

Thanks again guys
