I have 1999 Evinrude 9.9 4 stroke that had water in one of the cylinders (lower) when I went to winterize it. I am thinking the head gasket is bad. I plan to compression test to verify and then take off head to inspect. Hopefully just head gasket. Does anyone have list of torque specs I will need? cylinder head, manifold etc? is this a common problem with these motors?

Would recommend getting an OEM factory service manual. This will help you out in anything else you have probs on the mtr with.

No compression in lower cylinder. Removed head and found evidence of water being in there. Head very corroded/rusty. Could not really tell if head gasket was bad or not. Does not realy make sense how water found its way in there.

Wow thats still a baby for a outboard very new . I would never think that anything that new would have problems . Check your water pump too . I bet she had overheat when you last had her out on the water . It may as well be a bad head gasket from age . How offen do you run the motor what kind of use is on her .But boobie is right get the factory manual from evinrude .4 CYCLE is different than the older 2 cycle engines . You need to pump oil of some sort for lube for the crank and conecting rod bearing . 4 cycle will work just like a car in some sort but the only differents is your pumping water from the lake . You need to check where the water came from in the first place . Did you over heat it last time out on the water ?. You know I bet the casting for the block is aluminum casting . Make sure your block did'nt crack too. check for a warped head with a strait edge , I think you can use a feller gage to check for the proper gap under it . The factory manual should tell you the measurement you need . check yuor spark plug too , but you placed a gage for compression on it . what did you get in the good cylinder and the bad cylinder had no compression right .
