Evinrude 9.9 tiller extension

i am looking to make an extension on my 9,9 evinrude approx. 3 feet in length. i tried PVC attached to the throttle handle but it seemed like too much weight for just the throttle handle to take. i want to make something that attaches to the metal part of the tiller handle. any one have some suggestions. thanks.
