Evinrude 9.5, worth repairing?

I bought this '69 9.5 9922s off craigslist for cheap, it was a divorce sale and I didn't get much info on it.
I'm not too familiar with outboards but I have worked on lots of lawnmowers and other small engines. This appears to be missing it's fuel pump, prop and cone. Do you see anything else I'm missing? Everything appears to be in good working condition, the grease is still soft on all the moving parts, rubber for exhaust is still soft and supple. Pulled the plugs and compression is 73 on both cylinders. A few drops of fuel in the carb and it fires off on the first pull.
So, a fuel pump, prop, cone and pin, new lower seals and oil, clean the carb, cross my fingers and pray it all works and I'm not wasting my money..
Sorry for a lengthy first post! Here's a few pictures, please tell me if you see anything I should be aware of. And if you have an extra prop let me know, this is a budget build and the cheaper the better. Thanks!

Re: Evinrude 9.5, worth repairing?

I've never been a fan of the 9.5's as they're weird and working on the exhaust housing is pretty tough I hear. What is that weird nut assembly on top of the flywheel? I don't believe that's normal. The plug threads look real rusted, did they come out that way? Clean that up to be safe. The lower cylinder head looks like it may have overheated in the past. Look at used outbpoard places for the prop and pump. I think some are listed at the top of the forum in the secret info thread.

I have the parts manual for the '66 E9.5 (9622) if it could help. If yes, send me a private message (PM) with your email address and request.

And welcome to the forum.

I have the exact same motor (same year too) and I really like it. The compression is never really that high but if you search for "de-carb" on this web site, you will find one of the most important methods for maintaining that motor.

They like to be in a big bucket of water to be started, look into buying an impellar and put that at the top of the maintenance list.

That nut on the flywheel is not stock for sure. I have mixed feelings about these old 9.5's. There are good ones, and bad ones. Hopefully the exhaust gasket is ok. And DON"T break the pull start rope if you can help it. They suck in and snap the expensive and elusive recoil spring 95% of the time.

Hi Steve,

My dad is looking for a propeller shaft seal for this axact motor(1966 Evenrude 9622a). Do you know where to find parts online. I also was intersted in the manual for it as it is realy hard to find online. He has been using this motor for many years.

Thanks,

Thank you Daviet, I just read that this was the procedure. You are fast and accurate. The manual matched the part number on the seal he removed. Will call them on Monday.

Thanks,

I have a 1972 johnson 9.5 and it is the best outboard I have ever owned. Never fails to start even after sitting for a while. These aren't terrible powerful engines as I believe they were measuring HP at the powerhead back then rather than at the prop. I would say it is worth it to repair this old motor. If done right it will give you years of enjoyment.
