Evinrude 9.5 recoil starter

I am having problems with my 1969 Evinrude 9.5 hp. The spring retainer shaft (314586) that goes through the center of the recoil starter is broken. Has anyone successfully set one of these up for electric start? If so, can you give me some guidance on where to start. If not, does anyone have the part I am looking for?

All of the parts for the starter and the starter assembly are still available (at a price) through BRP dealers or on-line at the BRP Store: http://shop.evinrude.com/

You might find it better to check with salvage yards for a complete used assembly #0384604.

The 9.5 was never offered with electric start, nor a conversion kit. Newer 9.9hp motors were.
