My uncle has owned this motor since new and it has been sitting in his garage for at least five years. I'd say that it has under 100 hours on it - it actually looks new, aside from the usual scrapes on the skeg and paint wear on the propeller.

It's been run in salt water - but my uncle is diligent in flushing the motor, so I'm sure that was always done.

Here's the question: I noticed a line of corrosion on the powerhead, following what I assume is the head gasket. Is that typical of an engine of that age, or does it indicate failure of the head gasket and leakage? I've already replaced the impeller, but I'm now wondering if I should replace that head gasket before running the old Sportwin again. Never had any problems, but I'm worried that the corrosion went inward toward the cylinders, as well as outward to the paint.

Any thoughts?

Also, if anyone knows where I could find a replacement seal for the motor cover, I'd sure appreciate that info.

Thanks.

As inexpensive as a head gasket is, I'd probably plan on replacing it. It would give you an opportunity to see some of the motor's innards at the same time. Of course, if the compression is good why mess with it? If it ain't broke....... ;)
