I am looking at a boat that has either a 1994 or 1996 Evinrude 88HP motor. What is a 88HP motor vs a 90 HP motor? Are they good motors? What should the compression check show?
Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Evinrude 88HP?

The 88 and 90 are virtually identical. The only difference was that the 88 was not built with oil injection and some were not built with power trim and tilt. Some had those added later by dealers.

The 88 and 112 crossflow v-4's were OMC's "price leader" engines. Basically used as a marketing tool to combat Force and some of the imports.

Compression should be 110 or better. More importantly-the cylinders should be close to each other, usually with 10 %.

Thats pretty much right on, however there is no specific pressure for compression readings on OMC-built engines. The service manuals read "no more than 15 psi variance between the highest and lowest reading cylinders." This is because of the tolerances in compression gauges, i.e. an expensive (hi-quality) gauge will probably read around 110 psi, but a "blu-lite" special gauge may only read 85 psi, yet the engine is in reality still healthy.

-John
