Evinrude 85hp won't run wide open

I have an 85hp evinrude 2 cycle 1979. It won't run wide open. It seems to be running smooth and firing on all cylinders but just won't get that wide open scream it should have.The carbs have been rebuilt.When first fired up this year it ran fine for 5 minutes wide open then bogged down to the lower level.

did you check your jets to make sure they weren't plugged? Check your high speed jets and make sure they aren't clogged.

Hi, Froggy.<br /><br />Go to www.outboardrepairs.com and look up power loss.<br /><br />The troubleshooting advice there will help you find out what is wrong. I am guessing a dead cylinder.,<br /><br />Let us know how you fixed her.

Also, check your carbureter linkage to make sure carb is actually wide open when throttle is wide open.

I had the exact same problem with my 1978 85 hp evinrude! Before i bought the boat the owner cleaned the carbs up and it ran great. for no reason one day it just had no RPM in WOT. I tore carbs apart and cleaned out EVERYTHING including floats. I also replaced one coil on a plug that seemed to run wet all of the time. It ran like a champ after the carbs cleaned and coil replaced. I think it was the carbs that was the problem. Make sure your spark plug wires are still seating tight into the coil, i have seen them work lose before while removing the hood a few times. Good luck
