Hi,
I have a 1980 evinrude 85hp V4 model# E85TLCSA and want calibrate the trim gauge indicator.
The system works well, except that the needle is out of range: It gets to the "inside full" from the beginning of trim.
Any help?
Thanks.

few people use those gadgets once they quit working. better to trim your vessel for conditions at the time by sight of the hull and sound of the motor than use a random level. I think your ear is the best tach and trim guage going.

Yes, thank you.
I understand that, but I love these gadgets and want to calibrate as accurate as possible this indicator.
Can anybody help?
Thanks.

Spray some PB Blaster on the shaft of the trim sender and work back and forth a few times to loosen it up; my sender has no adjustment on it so I just do as the above post says, trim by sight and sound of motor and boat that is the best insicator you would have.

Assuming that your trim sensor sending unit which is located on the inside portion of the port transom bracket is in good working order, do the following.

Position the tilt reverse locking bar in the center hole of the transom brackets.

Lower the engine to that reverse tilt lock bar.... observe the reading of the trim gauge.

Loosen the retaining screws of the trim sensor sending unit slightly so that you can adjust it up or down as needed to center the gauge needle. (The retaining holes are slots)

The sending unit can be tested with a ohm meter. The wires of the sender, disconnected from their usual source, when connected to an analog ohm meter, should cause the ohm meter needle to move smoothly from one extreme to the other. Any loss of movement or jerkiness... replace the sensor sending unit.

When finished, remove the locking rod from that center transom bracket hole and return it to wherever it was.

Perfect explanation Joe, thanks.

But, can be that this model does not allow adjustment of the sensor?
In this case, has anyone been able to adjust the display by placing a resistor in series or parallel? If so, remember the value?

Thanks for all!

I worked on that model engine when it was new, the sending unit (sensor) was adjustable. If yours is not, then I could only assume that the circuitry within it is faulty. Personally I never heard of a resistor being used in the circuit.

Thank you, Joe!
As soon as I traveled to see my boat, I tell the results.

Have a nice day!

There are two aspects to the range of movement on that system. Movement with the two trim pegs is the trim range. Additional movement with the longer (single) cylinder is the tilt range. Keep in mind that the adjustable trim sender will only function in the "trim" range of the unit. The sender is not designed to work in the "tilt" range.
