My evinrude 85hp I am refurbishing has frozen steering. I have been trying to remove the steering rod, but it seems to be seized. Hammering and turning the rod have not yet worked. please let me know if you have any ideas. Pictures should be attached below. Thanks!

Hammering on the end may " mushroom " the end of the cable.---Makes it impossible to remove.-------Here I would remove that tilt tube.----Grind the tube to split / remove it , to salvage cable if it is still good.----Then replace parts as needed.-----Your location?

If it was mine, and I've done many, I would screw that nut back on, have someone at the helm applying pressure, heat the clamp arms at the tilt tube location and tap one way (lots of penetrant) then I use a slide hammer to work it the other way.

Work it back and forth and then eventually it breaks free.

Easiest way I know and it's not easy.

I've removed some pretty stuck ones but if it's fused then the aforementioned advice is all you got.

From the picture.... your motor looks pretty clean.

So basically heat the area around the nut and move it back and forth? Will give it a try, Thanks!

Yes, but have someone crank on the wheel on the direction needed. Pretty good amount of pressure but no superman stuff.

There are plastic bushings in the tilt assembles but with the old grease and stuff you can heat it longer than you think.

Small movements each direction and back to happy times.

Your steering cable is fine....it's your tube that's messed up.

What you need though is a new tilt tube....they make stainless ones.

More funs coming after you get it unstuck!

You can buy time by cleaning your existing tube with a brush and WD 40 and I run a brake cylinder hone up there.

It will continue to give you troubles though.
