a 1978 lower unit is compatible w a 1979 motor, they both r 85 hp

The easy way to answer is try it. I am pretty sure they are the same

The drive shafts and crank part numbers changed from the 78 to the 79 models. Compare the drive shaft spline count between the two lower units.

Driveshaft splines are the same.----All the same from 1973 and up , even the same on the V-6 driveshaft.
