I have a 1995 Pro Deep V-17 Bass Tracker it has a Mercury 40 hp on back of it right now.It runs perfect,is easy on gas,but does not have enough power for me with a couple of fishing buddies on board with thier gear.I found an 85 Evinrude 85 hp the guy thinks 1984.It runs good.starts right up,comes with controls. He wants $800.00 for it.It is clean looking. How will this motor change my boats drivability?speed, gas milage.Motor comes with power trim also.

1st question, what is the max hp your boat is rated for. you do not want to go over that.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Like TD said first don't overpower the boat. The second thing is that you will notice that you are using more gas. It will probably seem like alot more and infact will be at least twice what your are burning now. If your boat is rated for an 85 you will probably love the extra power since you would be underpowered now. If its not rated for an 85 I would look for the max rating and find a motor that size.

"More gas" is in the eye of the beholder. More gas per hour, but how far do you go in that hour?

i really think when " i can afford gas" , enters the question, you should not be boating.

Thats a good point, it really won't be an issue if you just go the same distances and then stop. If you run it the same amount of time then you will see the difference.

To the best of my knowledge, OMC did not make 85HP recreational motors from 1981 through 1990. It is important to know whether the motor is from the 1970's or the 1990's, since they are different motors in many ways.

My boat is rated for a 90 hp.I went over and he started it,in a barrel. That is the thing I don't know what year it is,it is not close by.I did'nt grab the model # before I left. But it did run well,it started right up,it was cold when he started it.The controls was missing the rubber grommet at the rear of it,where the cables go through, but everything worked good. How fast do you think it will go with that engine? It goes 28 mph with the 40 at 4500 rpms. With 2 guys. Thanks,it is looking better, the age thing is what is getting to me.

I took a picture of it.I can not post it,but it is not an old green motor. It is all white, with a blue and grey stripe on the sides of the cover. The 85 is at the rear and evinrude is on the center od the stipe.

If you are getting 28mph with the 40hp I would think that you could get into the 40mph range with a good running 85 hp proped to run at 56-5700 rpm. I would not worry so much about the age of the motor as the overall condition and maintaince or lack of. TD has given you good advise on what to look for there.

1967 Evinrudes were white, but it was 80hp. I don't think they made white Evinrudes after that till recent years. Lots of white Johnsons though.
