Just got a new fishing boat (well, new to me) that has an 8hp evinrude model E8RCOB. Looking for any information you can provide such as year of manufacture, fuel/oil mixture info, where I can get a repair manual, etc. I am new to outboard engines (my last boat had an inboard merc) so any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Mine was made in 1985. Good motor except you have to be careful the water passages don't get filled up with salt from saltwater boating. If it overheats enought, the rubber grommet will melt and the head has to come off.

That grommet at the top of the water tube is a PITA. I have an '84 6hp which is almost the same engine. Corrosion of the aluminum around the grommet squeezes it over the top of the water tube until it cuts off the water flow.

When you change the pump impeller make sure you can send a good flow of water up the water tube from a hose. And/or poke a stout wire up the tube. If you can feel something squidgy at the top that is the grommet and it needs changing! If you just hit something solid all is well for now.

The cylinder head water passages can become choked although that has not been a problem to me. Just that **##:!! grommet

Even though we flushed the motor most of the time the passages got plugged and I had to chisel it out.

Sometimes you can find an OEM manual on Ebay. Seloc and Chilton don't cut it.

Thanks for all of the info. One other question - does the 8hp have a reverse gear? If so, how do I get the motor to reverse? Thanks.

Yes it should have a reverse gear.

Slow down to idle speed (ignore any markings that may survive on the tiller as they can be way off)

Move the shift lever on the starboard side side smartly rearwards. (Forwards for forward gear, more or less vertical for neutral, inclined rearwards for reverse)

Don't engage gear gently that'll buggerup the dog clutch, move it smartly.

It may not engage if the engine is not running, in fact the manual says not to shift it into gear when not running.

Maybe of interest (click to enlarge) also have the owners manual if you cannot get one and need to know anything
