Hi, Guys and gals

My evinrude was recently striped and rebuild due to they had to replace the pistons. Oh, wee; being that it was a favor , now the engine won't start LOL...What could be the cause of this, if anyone knows? Im told that it could be a bad base timer or strator? But even if it's bad it should start up , no? the strator is for charging the battery and the base time is timing , no? Any way below is my engine info, any help or guidance will be appreciated..

1978 Evinrude V4, 115hp....

Thanks to all....

Here's some ideas.

If you have a safety switch on the control box, is the key in it?

Make sure you have spark to all the cylinders....should jump a 7/16" gap with a very hot spark. If no spark, disconnect the large engine harness connection (red plug) on the starboard side and jump the starter solenoid and check for spark. If you have spark now, problem lays forward in the controls. If still no spark, problem is at the engine.

Are the cylinders getting fuel? After cranking, are the plugs wet? Were the carbs rebuilt as part of the engine rebuild?

Take some premix in a spray bottle and shoot some fuel down the carb throats and crank the engine. See if it fires. If it will fire as long as you keep shooting fuel into the carbs, you have a fuel delivery problem.

Got a service manual? If not, get one.

Have you tried the troubleshooting guide in Engine FAQs, Angie's?

Even if that doesn't isolate the cause, it will tell you what to tell us, so we can guide you to the fix.

I really appreciate all the help...New findings, lol...I took off the Flywheel and disassemblt the strator and base timer, and guess what? When the flywheel was removed they drill holes , who knows why through the base timer. The base timer has three holes in it, hahahah. What a knuckle head that guy was. It appears that he had to tamper new threads on the fly wheel in order to take it off and fit the pulley and drilled right through the base timer. Now? could it be that the base timer is damaged by three holes drilled into it?

Unbeleiveable!!!

Thanks.
