I have a 1983 Evinrude 75 HP model # E75TRLCTE. I replaced the thermostat, and installed a new water pump repair kit(impeller, housing, ect.). My temp. gauge is reading hot. The tell tale is luke warm but the exhaust port water is very hot. Is this normal? The head is also fairly hot to the touch but the exhaust chamber is cool. The temp gauge is old and may be the problem, but I do not want to chance anything. The motor seems to be running great otherwise. Any suggestions please.

Change your thermostat. Exhaust water will be hot. If you can hold your fingers on the head for a long three count you probably are not overheating. If your gauge is trustworthy then I would believe it.

I already changed the thermostat, could it be bad? It was a original evinrude part.

If the thermostat is working then you probably have a restriction in your water jackets somewhere. A common place is just ahead of the thermostat. IF not you may have to drop your lower unit and hook up a hose to the water tube and try to blow whatever is in there out or at least move it to a spot where you can get to it. You can check your thermostat by dropping it in a pan of hot water and see if it opens up. Worst cast is you need to remove the exhaust cover and run a piece of soft wire through the passages to dislodge it. Try running it without the thermostat once and see if the head stays cool. Don't run on the water like this as it will use so much fuel you won't want the engine anymore and you will have to send it to me. I will pay shipping.

Take the stat out and recheck the temp. If it is cool then the stat must be bad. Will just take a minute.

Mark

Fireman, sorry. Had this punched in before I realized you already told him to do this. I had a 75ish 70 hp and the stat stuck closed. Cost me a powerhead.

Mark

Re: Evinrude 75 hp running hot.

Update. I removed the stat and engine runs very cool (probably too cool). I checked both of my t-stats in a cup of hot water, both open when hot. I am thinking my 23 year old temp gauge has had it. I can see and feel the water circulate through the exhaust port when the stat opens and closes, this water is hot. I can hold my fingers on the head for about 3-4 seconds before getting too hot. Does my motor have an automatic shutdown for heat?? I don't think it is overheating but want to make sure.

I don't believe in '83 they had the shutdown to slow mode only the temp sensor. If you can hold your fingers on the flat spot of the head for 10 seconds before you have to remove them you should be okay.

Update, I changed the Temp gauge and sending unit. Motor is operating in normal range. Thanks for all the help.

Hello, I have a 2001 75 hp e-tec that I just replaced the impeller on. The lower unit came right off and went back on just as easy. But, now it won't go into gear. The linkage move's but the prop will not. Please help. Thanks, Chris

Maybe better to start your own thread on this.
Linkage may have got out of synch when you replaced lower unit I.E. linkage in forward and control in neutral (or similar) or shift rod turned while it was off.
Just my 2 cents though. Many others will have many other thoughts.
