Hi,

I have an Evinrude 70HP 1980 E70TLCTE. I have removed the lower unit, the impeller and housing, removed the O ring and bearing at the top of the driveshaft. I have selected the reverse gear, (removed selector rod) and tried to remove the driveshaft from the lower unit with no luck. I have also removed the four screws in the Propeller housing and tried to slide out the propeller shaft, again with no luck. Is there a special way of removing the driveshaft and changing the bearings?

Help would be much appreciated

Many thanks

Once the bearing house assembly comes out there are two retaining rings to remove.Do you have a manual? schematic? You will see it with either.I just went to BPR I think their site is down.Try This one.I see that motor is a 1983 also.

I do have a schematic diagram, in the diagram I have removed bearing and O ring 41 and 36. O ring 48 is still attached.
Is this the retaining ring? If so, how do you remove this without damaging the housing. I am trying to replace bearing 2.
The driveshaft comes up about a cm, then it hits something, (gear?), I have selected fwd, rev and nutral gears but still only comes out a cm. I have attached photos.

your going to need to rig a puller to pull the prop shaft bearing carrier then pull the four screws that retain it ,once that is out you will need some special snap ring removers , remove reverse gear remove pinion gear then pull drive shaft. you really need a shop manual for it though it is invaluable when working on these engines. :) William
