I have heard both compression and carbs so I will try again. Here is my problem, my motor dies when I put the boat either forward or reverse gear with a little gas. The motor is a 3 cylinder 1978 model. After warming up a bit, The motor ran fine last year. This year I went out twice with the same results. I did leave gas in the motor over the winter months. I put in new plugs and gas cleaners with no better results. With the motor running in neutral, I move the carb linkage and the motor seems to run fine with plenty of pep. The problem is when I go into gear. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do the compression test, compression OK, go to spark test OK , remove carbuators and clean, set floats, replace gaskets.

Howdy, Johnny. Since you say you have heard compression and carbs, I will assume you have done something about it. If not, take Clanton's advice.

It is very common for an OMC three running on two cylinders to sound great under no-load conditions and croak as soon as you put a load on it. Carefully remove one plug wire at a time when she is runnning. If it doesn't cause the engine to drop rpm, maybe even die, it is a dead cylinder. See if it will arc at least 1/2" to the block. If not you have an ignition problem. Try swapping coils with another cylinder.

If you can get the arc, you have a fuel or fuel/air problem. Investigate the condition of the reeds for that cylinder and check your work on that carb.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Red sky at night. . .
JB

I would bet my last dime that your carbs are gummed up. The center carb supplies fuel to the number 1 and 3 carbs. Those carbs have a high and low speed fixed orifice. The high speed orifice located in the bottom of the float boal is prone to gumming up. Those older carbs came with fiber tips on the needle valves that were prone to stick. Install new needle valves and seats, thouroughly clean carbs and orifices and let her rip.
