I have a 1978 model Evinrude 70. When I put the boat either in forward or reverse and apply the throttle, the engine boggs down and dies. I took the cowling off and with the boat in neutral, I moved the carburator linkage and the motor seemed to run just fine. I feel that it had excellent response and power. But when I put the boat in gear and gave it a little gas, the engine dies. would rebuilding the carbs help? What would make the engine die under a load? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

You didn't give any history on the motor. Most likely it is related to the Carbs or spark advance. If you've owned the motor and it suddenly went bad suspect the carbs. If you just started looking at it expect anything.

Start by pulling the bowl off the lowest carb. Check for sediment buibd up. Make sure it is clean and that there is plenty of new gas, clean filter, the carb float moves freely, and no air leaks in the gas line/system. If any sediment is found in the lowest carb, move higher. Check the middle one also. Then the last one.
