model # E6SLEIA. Evinrude outboard, 1991 model 6hp. Hello i cant figure out this problem. first of all this motor has been sitting for a year or so.. started up fine when i purchased the other day...brought home and no start. here is what i have done so far. .. pumped ball tried starting motor... nothing. checked the spark...has spark. took off the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb and pumped the ball... fuel flows out when i squeeze the ball. When i sprayed fuel directly into the carb after removing the air filter the motor starts right up. I cant figure out what is wrong. How do i test if the fuel pump is working properly? Does anyone have any ideas what else i could check? thanks for the help.

The carb needs cleaning from sitting around with no use.

clean the carb again ... properly. Strip it down clean through all jets, orifices and passages. Also check the float and the needle valve.

You've proved that the priming ball works. That'll fill the carb and that'll be enough fuel for it to start and run for a while. If the fuel pump is defective you'll be able to keep it running by pumping the ball.

Also check the carb adjustments. See http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352

OK i totally stripped the carb apart. soaked in carb cleaner and i had the same problem. when i pump the primer ball it seems to get really hard and seems to not have any flow once the fuel fills the hose. i checked for any blockage up to the carb and it flows freely when i remove the gas line from the fuel pump to the carb. when i reattach the line however it gets really hard again and doesnt seem to flow. when i spray fuel directly into the carb it starts right up. any other suggestions? thanks

Sounds from that then as though it is not filling the carb bowl. Normally you should be able to sense the fuel flowing into the carb until the bowl is full. then the bulb becomes firm.

Look at the needle valve and the float I guess. Check the needle valve opens, and that there are no blockages in the valve or the carb inlet.
Check the float level. It should close the needle valve when it is horizontal or very slightly above, but open it when it falls below that. Check the float is operating freely.
There should be a little spring clip between the float arm and the needle check that's there and fitted correctly so that when the float falls it pulls the needle valve open. I'd be surprised if its vital though!

i have tried cleaning the carb again, checked the float and pin both seem to be moving freely. tried starting the motor again and nothing. when i pump the primer ball it feels like fuel is filling the hoses up to the carb and stops. like previously stated i checked the flow to the carb and it flows freely when the fuel line to the carb is removed. when i reattach and squeeze the primer ball it gets really hard and doesnt have any give once it reaches a certain point. again i sprayed some fuel mix directly into the carb and the motor starts right up first pull. when running i tried squeezing the primer ball to keep it running and the ball is still very full of fuel and hard and will not squeeze at all. Any suggestions as to figure out what is causing the problem

Back to the same suggestion. Check out the needle valve, blocked or stuck . If you cannot get fuel into the cab then thats what you have to look at.

Float fitted properly?

Is there fuel in the float chamber when you dismantle it?
If no then its the above.
If yes then its back to looking at carb jets

There's a drain plug in the float bowl, take it out, there should be fuel pouring out when you do, now pump the bulb, fuel should pour out again.

If fuel pours out of the drain then its plugged jets, if no fuel comes out then look at the float needle and seat again.

I'll stick my 2 cents in. It could be the carb but I had the same problem once. It was the small screen in the fuel pump that had become clogged with debris. Ran like it was starving for fuel than quit and wouldn't start. Remove the fuel pump, just 2 screws, and give the bulb a few pumps. Fuel should come spraying out, if not the screen is clogged. Make sure the gasket where the fuel pump is mounted is not covering the hole between the pump to the carb.
