Evinrude 6hp -1985

I bought a really clean 1985 Evinrude 6hp motor to push a 12’ aluminum lake boat.
I have had a couple of small 4 stroke motors on sailboats in years past but i am not familiar 2 strokes. Have not boat tested it yet but it runs well in a tank. I bought a copy of Evinrudes manual that covers this motor as well as others in the Evinrude line. I want to service it, while at the local boat repair shop buying gear lube the fella advised to run it with 50:1 rather than the recommended 100:1 fuel mix.

Q: what do y’all run your mix at?
Q: the recommended evinrude grease is not available. What is the better choice for an outboard motor?
Q: any tips for longevity? Do you run your motor in the off season, how often?

Run at 50:1, later OMC went away from the 100:1

Find the OMC/johnnyrude grease

Your motor is already 40 years old. Proper maintenance will keep it going

100 to one was an evinrude mistake and changed it quickly. They can be ran at 100 to one but only under certain conditions. Evinrude grease is still available but and quality marine grease will do.

Longevity? Don't run ethanol fuel, fresh water rinse it regularly, grease it grease it, gearcase oil. Probably the most important.

these small engines have a strong heritage back to the 50's ...just feed it good fuel, oil, impellers, grease and some car wax and they last forever

The new style 7.5 HP came out in 1980.-----Then marketed later as a 6 and 8 HP.---Sweet running motors.-----Often ruined by folks who do not know how to operate / maintain a 2 stroke motor.
