Hi everyone.
The engine is a 1995 evinrude 3 cylinder 60hp
Model no BE60TLEOC
Serial no G 03751787

yesterday when i lifted the hood of the engine to just have a check around etc,i noticed a
broken orange wire .
The wire comes from the cdi unit and goes into a 5 pin rubber plug.
I have no idea when this got broken off, but it looks like its been a while.

The wires on the plug are marked in the slots the pins go in as follows.

A..Brown
B..Brown/yellow
C..Orange.....
D..Orange
E..Blacl/yellow

The broken wire was the orange one going into pin hole C

can someone please tell me what this wire is for ?
the engine seemed to run fine the other day in the water tub, started good etc.

So now im wondering what this wire is actually for ?
i do have trouble in the tacho not working could this be anything to do with that ?
Also the warning horn dont work, again could this be anything related ?

I have repaired it and soldered it etc and put back into the plug, But not yet even
tried to start the engine incase someone has dismantled this for a reason etc.

Once i know what its for,I will feel a bit safer to start the motor as i dont
want to be ruining any of the electrics .

I have tried to find it in the online manual with no luck.

I'm not 100% sure but i think the orange wires (orange, orange/blue, orange/green) go from the stator to the ignition coils. so if one is broken then you are only getting spark on 2 cyls. See what colour wires are going to the ignition coils that the spark leads attach to.

High fishfeatures, its none of the three orange coil wires, they are all fine.

On the back of the power packt you have 3 totaly seperate bunches of wires.
one bunch has 5 wires, another bunch has 3 wires plus earth lead, and the last bunch has 8 wires.
the 8 wire bunch has 3 of them going to the coils (1 each), this is all good.

my broken wire came from the bunch with the 5 wires,
2 orange wires, 1 black with yellow strip ,1 brown & 1 brown with yellow stripe.

I think the engine is running far too good to be only running on 2 cylinders,
its realy sweet, plenty of ooomph and very smoothe, instant starting, instant throttle response.
Like i say i have no idea if this just broke today or months ago.

The two orange wires are from an additional low voltage winding on the stator which is used in the power pack for the overrev limit circuit at 6700rpm or 2500rpm in SLOW mode.

thanks WernerF

So unless the engine was over reved it would not make any difference to normal running !!!

But what exactly is this slow mode ?
is this something to do with over heating alarm ?

so glad to know there is people out there who do understand electrics.

Yes, S.L.O.W. mode (OMC calls it so) means that the engine is limited to 2500 rpm when the overtemp switch has triggered.
