Hello all,

About 2 years ago, I bought my pontoon boat with the 1993 60 h.p. evinrude pro-series (TE60TLET). It starts up right away every time, and runs good the whole time, but after 5-10 minutes, the boat slows down to half the speed, yet revving the same rpm. I do notice that the tach seems to go up and down alot on the gauge, despite no difference in actual RPM. It does seem to me that the tach registers a higher reading than actual rpms, just going by ear (maybe 1500 rpm difference higher than actual).

I assumed it to be a spun prop hub, but after changing out the prop, it still does it. Just before I bought the boat, the owner had the following done because the engine "wouldnt rev up":

1) 1 new coil
2) fuel filter
3) Stator assembly
4) Power pack assembly
5) R&R carbs and clean (some reed valves dirty or something, per a receipt)

It looks to me that the marina mechanics just replaced everything available and charged the guy $1200.00

I read on this forum that a rectifier could cause the power issue and occasional tach "bouncing" issues. One other question: I was playing with the power trim to plane nicer, after about 10 minutes, it stopped working. Is there a fuse in this motor for that, or did the trim motor, or switch fry?

Any ideas? I really appreciate your advice.

my boat seems to have the same problem. My carbs are clean and have very clean fuel getting to the motor. I will let you know if I hear anything. Its frustrating, since there doesnt seem to be a good reason for the power loss. mine acts like it is choking out. Good luck

if the engine revs the same and the prop is not slipping, then something is changing you're not aware of.

Is it overheating, going into slow mode?
Can you put a hand on the cylinder head for 3 seconds when it starts acting up?

it could be dropping to 2500rpm and the tach is nuts, I know if my rpm is dropping without looking at the tach.

are you dropping spark? Got a timing light?

Have you spark gap tested it with a gap tester from the auto store?

Sounds like the seller had a mechanic who drove him out of boating, with this engine at least, you can fix is easily but you do need to get the manual and simple basic tools. Then do the basic tests and baseline the engine, get everything back to spec.

so...do you have the factory manual?

Re: Evinrude 60 hp losing power after 10 minutes

sounds like it is getting hot and your temp sensor is telling your power pack to go to S.L.O.W. mode this keeps people from running their motors to fast at hot temps. I would suggest replaceing the impeller water pump in your lower unit if you havent already done so if you have and it is pumping water good then it sounds like your temp sensor is bad. A way you can test this is simply unplugging the wires to your temp sensor and if it is your problem it will rev up just fine but, be sure you are pumping water good and you motor is not accually getting hot. I had the same problem you are having and I went through the carbs, replaced spark plugs and wires. I took it to a local marine shop and they knew right away what was going on they unplugged the wires to my temp sensor and it reved right up they replaced the temp sensor and made sure it was not getting hot... This sensor is easy to replace it just plugs in to the head and it only cost around 60 dollars. If you decide to replace your water pump it is not that hard to do so yourself and it will only cost around 25 dollars just for the impeller.
